Parent Resource Center>>> PRC Parent Resource Center 9/28/2010 1:03 PM >>> Good Afternoon everyone-
We have attached a wonderful Power Point about the Parent Resource Center and what we can do for families in our school system. Kathy Carpenter developed this to be used at Garrisonville Elementary's Open House. It was playing at a table out in the hall with PRC brochures and sign up sheets for our email information and distribution list.
The Power Point highlights our services and resources for families and staff. Although our main focus is students receiving Special Education services we also have general parenting resources, behavior and social skills resources that might interest your general education families. In addition to the materials here at the PRC, we can also assist families in finding community resources such as parenting classes, behavioral supports and other social services.
The PRC's interaction with staff continues to grow each year. Last year, approximately half of the many resources checked out from the PRC were checked out by staff. Our extensive bibliography is available on our PRC Fusion page under "Department Files". If you have not had an opportunity to visit our Fusion page, please check it out at http://prc.stafford.schoolfusion.us/modules/groups/integrated_home.phtml?gid=991938&=2033819fa78a17f68249cb9ac77daa60 . This Power point is also available in the Department Files section at the bottom of our activities page.
Please consider using this Power point at future "Open House" or "Back to School" nights to help your staff and families learn about what the Stafford County Schools Parent Resource Center can do for them.
If we can help you or your staff in any way please don't hesitate to contact us at 540-658-6710 or prc@staffordschools.net ![]() Homework ClubThe Homework Club is for students who need extra guidance with how to organize their time and stay on task when doing homework. The Club meets before buses are called Mon-Thurs. There is also an empahsis on being organized in general and using one's agenda planner effectively to write down assignments and the materials that one might need in order to complete assignments. The Club is for students who are either teacher or parent recommended.
![]() Different Groups OfferedThe school counselors and the school social worker offer a variety of groups to students over the course of the school year. Each year different groups are offered since the needs of the students change from year-to-year. Some of the groups that we have offered are the Friendship Group, Girlfriends Group (an all girls group), Anger Management Group, Banana Splits/Family Change Group, Incredible Hornets (Self-esteem) Group, and the Tornado (Weather) Group to name a few. We also meet individually with students about these same topics over the course of the year, and we can provide parents/guardians with a list of outside community counselors who may be beneficial for students who may need on-going counseling services.

Helpful Resources 2-1-1 is an easy to remember phone number connecting people with free information on available community services. When you dial 2-1-1, a trained professional listens to your situation and suggests sources of help using one of the largest databases of health and human services in Virginia. 2-1-1 VIRGINIA is a service of the Virginia Department of Social Services provided in partnership with the Council of Community Services, the Family Resource and Referral Center, CrisisLink, The Planning Council, the United Way of Central Virginia, and the United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg. The Olweus [pronounced Ol-VEY-us] Bullying Prevention Program is a comprehensive, school-wide program designed for use in elementary, middle, or junior high schools. Its goals are to reduce and prevent bullying problems among school children and to improve peer relations at school. The program has been found to reduce bullying among children, improve the social climate of classrooms, and reduce related antisocial behaviors, such as vandalism and truancy. The Olweus Program has been implemented in more than one dozen countries around the world.* *taken from website The mission of RACCAP is to promote positive parenting and to prevent child abuse and neglect in the RFappahannock Area Community. Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters matches children, ages 6-13, with positive, caring volunteers who act as role models. Our “Bigs” provide the missing link with friendship, guidance and encouragement and often fill the gap created by the loss of a parent. It is a second chance for a child to receive additional one-on-one attention, to be recognized for their talents and courage and to be supported in growing into healthy, strong adults.* *taken from website The Responsive Classroom is an approach to elementary teaching that emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in a strong and safe school community. The goal is to enable optimal student learning. Created by classroom teachers and backed by evidence from independent research, the Responsive Classroom approach is based on the premise that children learn best when they have both academic and social-emotional skills. The approach therefore consists of classroom and schoolwide practices for deliberately helping children build academic and social-emotional competencies.* *taken from website Stafford County Department of Social Services strives to provide quality assistance and comprehensive services to citizens in need that will strengthen the family structure while promoting self-reliance, responsibility for family and protection of children and adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation through community-based services.* *taken from website Counseling Calendar |
